Our History
The Natural History Society
The Society was originally founded under the name, “The Natural History Society,” by Professor E. Julian Duncan in the 1960s, however, in April of 1987, The Natural History Society was rebranded, thereby changing its name to “The Biological Society”.
Our Work
During those years, the Executive Team was responsible for many forms of conservation work around Trinidad and Tobago. Their efforts were not left unnoticed, for in 1998, the Society was presented with the Green Leaf Award from the Environmental Management Authority, for their work on building awareness through environmentally based conservation endeavours, some of them including activities such as Turtle Patrols, The Biological Society Week, and recycling initiatives for which the Society received further accolades. In October 1998, we were also presented with an award by the UWI for our contribution to the promotion of campus life and local environmental awareness.
The First Registered NGO
The Society became the first registered NGO to exist at the time, 1987, on the UWI St. Augustine Campus!
