About the club

The UWI Biological Society is an environmental conservation organization based at the UWI St. Augustine campus. It consists mainly of students and staff but is open to any person that is interested in nature and the protection of our natural environment. Our activities are inclusive of General Meetings, Conservation Conversations, Beach Clean-ups, Nature Walks, Hikes, Sustainability Drives, Environmental Initiatives, Tree Re-planting, Legislations (when possible,) and so much more!

Mission Statement

Our overarching objective is to promote responsible cohabitation between humans and the natural environment via the empowerment of individuals within the society. Our strategies for fulfilling this mission are based around education and exposure to the beauty and importance of nature as well as the existing threats to our natural environment. Many of our projects are aimed to educate ourselves and the public, however, we also take part in restoration activities and projects concerning the protection and preservation of nature.

Our Watchwords

Restoration

Apart from informing people of the need to protect the natural areas of our country we also encourage them to get personally involved in the process of remedying the damage done. Some of our restoration projects involve tree planting, recycling drives

Preservation

We also engage in activities that actively help to preserve our existing natural environment. One of our main ventures in this area is our annual beach clean-ups on turtle nesting beaches in conjunction with Nature Seekers.

Education

The only way we can truly change our view of our natural environment is to become intimately familiar with it. Over the years the society has engaged in many educational ventures both on our own and in conjunction with other organizations in the attempt to install in the public a healthy interest and respect for the natural environment.
